The route into junior hockey starts with a Rookie’s ‘Learn to Skate’ programme managed by the rink. This runs from 6.00 – 7.00 p.m each Friday and comprises a 12 badge system, each grade taking 6 weeks, designed to introduce basic skating skills.
Allied to this the Junior Hockey Club runs a ‘Learn to Play’ programme Fridays 5.00 – 6.00 p.m. Participants need to have mastered basic skating before they start, having attained Rookie badge 4 or higher, but the Club can loan equipment such as helmets, stick and gloves.
The Friday sessions currently costs £9 for 5.00 – 7.00 p.m. inclusive and includes public skating to 9.00 p.m. afterwards. A £1 refund is made is if attendees choose not to stay for the public session and there is a lower charge just for the Learn to Skate element.
Once a reasonable degree of competence has been reached players will be invited along to team training which at U10 and U12 level is 6.00 – 7.00 every Tuesday and Wednesday. The rink charge £4 for these training sessions and players who want to commit then need to register with the English Ice Hockey Association who and pay an annual fee for insurance purposes and eligibility to play in League games. On top of this the Club charges monthly subs to cover League competition expenses, including coach travel to and from away games.
