Mohawks out-stung the sting

The Whitley Bay Mohawks (under 14s) got their North division 2 campaign off to a start with a home game against Sutton Sting, Mohawks looking to bounce back after a difficult 2013/14 season.  The team have been training hard all summer and have a number of younger players stepping up to bolster the team roster.

As expected the game got off to a nervy start in front of a very good crowd with both teams trying to find their feet until Whitley captain Jamie Ord opened the scoring in the fifth minute. Sutton hit back with two goals before Ord hit the equalising goal just three seconds from the end of the period.

Ord scored just six seconds into the second period but Sutton levelled again within a minute in keeping with the see-saw nature of the match.  Whitley then hit a hot streak with five goals without reply, four more for Ord and one for Holly Johnson.  Two more goals for each team left the score 10-5 in Whitley’s favour at the end of the second period.

The third period followed the same pattern as the second with Whitley outscoring the visitors 6 goals to two leaving the final score an ultimately comfortable sounding 16-7 victory, although that wouldn’t do justice to the perseverance of Sutton who battled right to the final buzzer. Spirit of the game for Whitley went to Ethan McLaughin and a special mention to Bobby Campbell making his debut in goal, even bagging an assist.

Captain Jamie Ord, who bagged 15 of his team’s 16 goals reflected on the game, “we knew Sutton would come and battle hard and that is exactly what happened.  We are delighted with the win and look forward to building on it in future games”.
