Mixed results against Nottingham

Sunday afternoon saw Nottingham travel up to Whitley Bay to take on Tomahawks. Play started with both sides showing that they were really up for this match, with play being very physical from the start. It was Nottingham that opened the scoring at 10.15 with a power play goal which was quickly levelled just 40 seconds later when Whitley Bay’s Ross Douglass (11) left the penalty box and unleashed a slapshop which rifled the puck into the back of the oppositions net.

Nottingham’s second goal of the period came at 12.44. The opening of the second period saw Nottingham score at 15.39, then again at 18.36. A Whitley Bay power play goal came at 26.57 when Jamie Ord (27) fired the puck into the back of Nottingham’s net after a pass from Ross Douglass. Nottingham scored again at 28.07 only to be matched at 28.27 by Whitley Bay after Cameron Kushnirenko (43) fed the puck to Jamie Ord who made a magnificent diagonal cross ice pass to Ross Douglass who scored top right corner passed Nottingham’s keeper.

The third period started as the second period had ended with Whitley Bay outworking their opponents. Nottingham were punished at 42.50 with a brilliant individual effort,  power play goal from Anthony Wetherell (14) which brought the home team to within one goal. With 2 minutes to go Whitley Bay swapped netminder Jessica Kinghorn for an extra attacker,  but were unlucky not to level the game after a very gutsy team effort which finished Nottingham 5 Whitley Bay 4. Anthony Wetherell was awarded Whitley Bay’s spirit of the game after an extremely strong performance.

Elsewhere in the Club, Whitley Bay’s Mohawks also took on Nottingham in their away leg of the division 2 north under 14 league. Following the great success on the home leg, the away leg proved even better for the Mohawks with a win of 8 – 3.
